Welcome to the Rileys

19 November 2018

Welcome to the Rileys 2009
  • Director: Jake Scott
  • Based on a novel: no
  • Cast: James Gandolfini, Melissa Leo, Kristen Stewart
  • Personal “oh yeah him/her” reaction, i.e. have seen this actor in:
    • James Gandolfini – Not Fade Away, In the Loop, The Sopranos, Romance & Cigarettes, The Man Who Wasn’t There, She’s So Lovely, Get Shorty, True Romance
    • Melissa Leo – Oblivion, Frozen River, Veronica Mars, 21 Grams, Homicide Life on the Streets, The Ballad of Little Jo
    • Kristen Stewart – Twilight, The Runaways, Into the Wild, Undertow
  • Why? Gandolfini, Leo
  • Seen: 18 November 2018

Lois (Leo) and Doug (Gandolfini) Riley’s teenaged daughter has died in a car crash. Doug tries, not very successfully, to lead a normal life. Lois retreats into isolation and pills.
While in New Orleans for a convention Doug encounters a young prostitute Mallory (Stewart) and decides to stay in New Orleans to rescue her. Lois struggles against her agoraphobia to join him.
Mallory is not always willing to be rescued and Doug becomes a stern father. Lois arrives in New Orleans.
It’s an interesting study of characters and relationships and the acting is good, especially (surprisingly) Stewart, but it feels contrived. It’s not as gripping as it should be but the less than feel-good ending helps.

3 ½ * of 5 (Hal gave it 5)
