       This film was our first encounter with Taika Waititi, and it was just by chance that we happened upon it, really. Then we found The Flight of the Conchords then What We Do in the Shadows then Boy. It’s time to watch them all again, starting here.

       Lily (Horsley) and Jarrod (Clement) are nerds. They’re weird. They make the Conchords look normal. They make the vampires look normal. She’s the shark, he’s the eagle. They’re both gaming experts. They’re perfect for each other. Or…? Actually, he’s awful, but she’s smitten.

       It’s funny and sad and painful and whimsical. Lily is sweet and wise. Jarrod is a pathetically dreadful loser.

       And if there’s anything Waititi knows how to do it’s losers. And the absurd.
