The Informant

7 January 2019

The Informant 2009
  • Director: Steven Soderbergh
  • Based on the book by Kurt Eichenwald
  • Cast: Matt Damon, Melanie Lynskey, Scott Bakula
  • Personal “oh yeah him/her” reaction, i.e. have seen this actor in:
    • Matt Damon – Interstellar, Elysium, Contagion, True Grit, The Brothers Grimm, The Bourne Identity, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Dogma, Saving Private Ryan, Good Will Hunting,
    • Melanie Lynskey – The Perks of Being a Wallflower
  • Why? I have no idea. It must have been very cheap.
  • Seen: 6 January 2019

A super dextrose producing corporation is losing money. Biochemist executive Mark (Damon) has to fix it. Or something. My eyes are already glazing over. The subject bores me to tears.
There’s some kind of espionage or blackmail or something going on. FBI and stuff.
This is crushingly dull. Mark is obnoxiously Everyday Joe good guy (or not). His wife’s (Lynskey) baby-doll voice is irritating. The upbeat music is annoying.
We fast forward and can still hardly stay awake. It seems good guy Mark is a crook too. Or bi-polar. Or something.
Why was this movie made? To show us that corporations are criminal? Duh. That good guys are sometimes bad guys? Duh. That the American government and the FBI are not necessarily completely democratic representatives of justice? Duh.
Based on a true (and very American) story. Which doesn’t help at all.
