Gnomeo and Juliet

3 December 2018

Gnomeo and Juliet 2011
  • Director: Hany Abu-Assad
  • Based on the play by William Shakespeare
  • Cast: Voices of many top actors
  • Personal “oh yeah him/her” reaction, i.e. have seen this actor in:… I’ll skip this step this time.
  • Why? Shakespeare connection and all those voices
  • Seen: 1 December 2018

Gnomeo is a blue garden gnome. Juliet is a red garden gnome. The Blues and the Reds have been feuding forever. As have their garden owners.
It’s very clever, amusing, imaginative. Kids will have fun with all the action and silliness. Shakespeareans will have fun with the Shakespeare. ‘What’s in a gnome?’ ‘A weed by any other name is still a weed.’ For cineastes it’s a challenge to match the voices with the gnomes. Maggie Smith = Gnomeo’s mum. Michael Caine = Juliet’s dad. James McAlvoy = Gnomeo. Emily Blunt = Juliet. Stephen Merchant = Paris. Marc Lucas = Benny. Patrick Stewart = Shakespeare. But oh dear oh dear, I missed Juliet Walters as Miss Montague and Richard Wilson as Mr Capulet! And Dolly Parton as Dolly Gnome.
Never mind. For everyone, well, for me anyway, it’s just good entertainment.

3 * of 5 (Hal was not entertained, he gave it 2*.)
