Tea with Mussolini

Tea with Mussolini 1999

  • Director: Franco Zefirelli
  • Seen by this director: Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew
  • Based on the book: no
  • Cast: Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright, Cher, Lily Tomlin
  • Personal “oh yeah him/her” reaction, i.e. have seen this actor in:
    • Maggie Smith – many including Richard III.
    • Judi Dench – many, including many Shakespeare films.
    • Joan Plowright – Surviving Picasso, An Enchanted April
    • Cher – many
    • Lily Tomlin – A Prairie Home Companion, Orange County, Homicide Life on the Street, 9 to 5, Laugh-In
  • Why? The cast
  • Seen:  Twice before. Now 4 December 2023

A groups of silly old rich English ladies and two vulgar rich American women living in Florence, Italy in the 1930s take on an orphan boy (supposedly Zefirelli himself). The Fascists are taking over and then the war comes.

I loved this film the first two times but I think I was just dazzled by the cast. It was possibly the first time I’d seen some of them. Now I find it all very jolly and glossy. Without the fabulous cast, it would hardly be worth watching. What a disappointment. I was really looking forward to seeing an old favourite. Alas, things change.
