Doctor Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Doctor Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb 1964

  • Director: Stanley Kubrick
    • Seen by this director: Eyes Wide Shut, Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, 2001, Spartacus, Paths of Glory
  • Based on the book: no
  • Cast: Peter Sellers, George C Scott,
  • Personal “oh yeah him/her” reaction, i.e. have seen this actor in:

o   Peter Sellers – The Pink Panther mainly. Possibly others.

o   George C Scott – The Yellow Rolls Royce

·       Why? A classic

  • Seen: Twice before (I fell asleep the second time). Now 26 April 2023

This is such an iconic film that it’s going to be tricky to see it with 21st century eyes. Will it be hopelessly dated or applicable to today?

       Both.

The story: an insane American general orders nuclear bombs dropped on the Soviet Union. Others try to stop it. It’s a comedy about the outrageous insanity of war. Still valid. Otherwise, it doesn’t hold up. The humour is dated and often offensive, and mostly not at all funny. I don’t like it now.
