Maria, seventeen years old, quits her job in a long-stemmed roses
packing centre because her boss is a tyrant. She’s pregnant and refuses to
marry her boyfriend because they don’t love each other. Her mother and sister
need her income. She goes to Bogota and through an acquaintance she gets a job
smuggling cocaine to the US by swallowing 60-70 grape-sized packets.
It’s a harrowing film about the exploitation of young women by drug
lords.
Next time you buy long-stemmed roses, think of those who cut off the
thorns and leaves from the stems.
