Ant-Man

Ant-Man 2015

  • Director: Peyton Reed
    • Seen by this director: Down With Love, Grosse Point
  • Based on the book: no
  • Cast: Paul Ruud, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Peña
  • Personal “oh yeah him/her” reaction, i.e. have seen this actor in:
    • Paul Ruud – The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Cider House Rules, Romeo and Juliet
    • Michael Douglas – A Perfect Murder, The Game, Falling Down, A Chorus Line, The China Syndrome
    • Evangeline Lilly – Crisis, The Hobbit etc, Lost
    • Michael Peña – The Martian, American Hustle, Babel, Million Dollar Baby, Crash, The United States of Leland
  • Why? It’s worth a try
  • Seen: 5 December 2022

Ex-con Scott (Ruud) is chosen to be Ant-Man, the ultimate weapon developed by scientists with Michael Douglas as the good guy battling those who want to use the shrinking machine for evil.

I can’t help but compare this to one of my favourite films from my childhood, The Incredible Shrinking Man. Considering the technology available then – or even disregarding that – the effects of Shrinking are more impressive and the existential message, which Ant-Man lacks, is profound.

Ant-Man is fun at times but it’s also much too long. The family stuff is shallow and too sweet to engage one’s emotions.

It’s not bad but it’s not good either. X-Men it is not.
