How can there be freedom in an Afghan women’s
prison? This Swedish film shows us.
Most of the women in this prison are there
because they’ve ‘fled from home’, sentenced to up to fifteen years, more than
the one there for murder. They crowd together with their children.
One woman was arrested for running away
with her boyfriend to marry against their families’ wishes. He’s in the men’s prison
on the other side of the wall. They risk further punishment by smuggling letter
to each other.
Another fled with her five children
because her husband beat his wives and children so badly that one wife and one
child died. She was sentenced to fifteen years.
That’s why, for these women, prison is much better than home.
5 * of 5
SPOILER PS One of
these women now lives in Sweden. Another was reportedly stoned tp death by her
family upon release from prison.
