At the end of the war Antonia (van
Ammelrooy) returns with her daughter Danielle (Dottermans) to the farm in the
rural Netherlands where she was born and raised. She is considered the outcast,
the village black sheep but she is the one who defends and befriendsthe bullied
and abused. She knows everyone’s old secrets and she doesn’t want a new
husband.
Narrated like a fairy tale by her great granddaughter, it is full of eccentric characters and pokes fun at the church, marriage, romance, traditional families. It’s funny, whimsical, touching and worth its Oscar for best foreign language film. Prudes don’t like it, it seems.
